Les Figues Press & Open Press

OP3We are excited to announce the next edition of our annual Los Angeles literary event called Open Press. Les Figues is co-curating this weekend-long event, which will take place October 9th, 10th, & 11th 2015.

Open Press is a medium to extend the work of the writer, editor, and curator, and instigate new channels of reciprocity among those interested and engaged in what might constitute the literary at any given time. Over the course of three days, Open Press 2015 will feature panels, talks, readings, performances, a moveable book fair, and more in four “at home” locations across the Los Angeles area.

We are co-curating Open Press with four other Los Angeles-based literary projects (eohippus labs, Entropy, Insert Blanc Press, Poetic Research Bureau).  The idea of Open Press is to host a series of events (readings, panels, performances, and moveable book fair). In other words, Open Press is a kind of literary moveable feast, in which we travel to various sites over the course of three days. Each of the co-curators is inviting one or more literary projects that they admire to participate in these panels, readings, etc. RSVP for addresses at [email protected]

Performance-as-making and conversation
hosted by Les Figues
Sunday, October 11, 2015
4-7 pm at the Poetic Research Bureau

The performance-as-making and conversation will be centered around the following ideas: As literary projects, our publishing and curatorial practices are always acts and mergings of collective authorship, or making. Together, we are reading, writing, editing and curating in the forms of books, readings, performances and our ongoing public conversations about work.

Featuring:

Kristen Nelson (Casa Libre,)
Angel Dominguez (Tract/Trace: Bodies/Pages)
pablo lopez (comma, poetry)
Tom Trudgeon (Basic Editions)
Gil Gentile (Basic Editions)
Teresa Carmody (Les Figues Press)

We imagine the event to be an active, collaborative textual engagement. Each participating project will present a reading or performance centered around the questions: What is collective making? How do and how can individual practices connect to larger meaning making? How might we do this otherwise? Toward imagining and creating a different world?

During the reading and performances, we will invite the audience to “make” along with the author. We will supply possible materials to work with and to “make” with. In this way, we hope to inspire a listening that is a creating, a hearing that is material and participatory.

Following the readings/performances, we will share – what we made, our ideas about the work and beyond – in a conversation and a collaboration.
