acker_desk1Les Figues Press | Kathy Acker Fellowship

In honor of experimental novelist, punk poet, essayist, and sex-positive feminist writer Kathy Acker, and in support of innovative, exceptional text-based practices, Les Figues Press is now offering a Kathy Acker Fellowship.

The Kathy Acker Fellowship provides a part-time, 9-month appointment for an emerging writer/artist, literary editor, or arts curator/organizer. The Kathy Acker Fellow will learn the ins-and-outs of small press publishing while also completing a curatorial project in the City of West Hollywood.

The 2015 Fellow will help coordinate Memes/Manifestos, two related but discrete events to be held at the MAK Center Schindler House. Both events focus on using language to make social and artistic change, and include a performance or panel discussion to be followed by a writing workshop. The first event, Memes, will convene former Queer Nationals to talk about the group’s historic use of slogans and stickers as a form of social protest and propaganda, before leading the audience in a sticker-making workshop. Memes will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2015, in conversation with the City’s co-sponsored exhibit Art/AIDS/America at MOCA PDC. The second event, Manifestos, will feature artists and writers published in the forthcoming Les Figues title TrenchArt Monographs: hurry up please its time. Manifestos will include an evening performance and a day-long writing workshop, in which attendees will be encouraged to reflect on and articulate their own practice in cultural and social terms. Manifestos is scheduled for November 21-22, 2015.

Kathy Acker Fellows will receive a full-scholarship to attend Figues Camp in July 2015. As Kathy Acker’s desk is housed in the Les Figues offices, Fellows will also be able to use Acker’s desk as a workstation.
